Therefore, this comprehensive guide covers everything couples need to know about getting married at Notre Dame, from exclusive Basilica requirements to open-access campus receptions.

Additionally, according to Notre Dame Hospitality, “Having a Notre Dame wedding is about the entire Notre Dame experience. Couples come to campus to celebrate tradition, personal memories, and a higher degree of hospitality.”

Booking Process for Basilica Weddings

Basilica weddings open on a two-year rolling calendar with all reservations made online through the official website. In addition, no walk-ins are accepted and most importantly, you may only submit one form per couple, and dates are not guaranteed until your complete reservation is processed.

Furthermore, the couple must also select the priest or deacon who will preside at their wedding – typically someone they know and trust who serves as a representative of the Church. And any priest in good standing, approved and delegated by the Basilica Rector, may preside.

Catholic Requirements and Marriage Preparation

Beyond university eligibility, Basilica weddings require comprehensive Catholic marriage preparation including:

  • Marriage preparation program (Pre-Cana) completed at least six months before the wedding
  • Diocesan paperwork including baptismal certificates, affidavits, and marriage registration forms
  • Music and liturgy planning with approved sacred music only
  • Marriage license obtained in St. Joseph County, Indiana

The Basilica provides detailed guidelines for all aspects of Catholic wedding preparation, ensuring each celebration honors the sacred nature of the sacrament.

Reception Venues: Open to Everyone

In contrast to Basilica ceremonies, Notre Dame’s reception venues welcome all couples, regardless of university affiliation. As a result, this accessibility means that getting married at Notre Dame through a campus reception is available to anyone, allowing couples to experience the magic of celebrating their marriage on one of America’s most beautiful campuses.

Popular Notre Dame Reception Venues

Notre Dame offers a wide range of reception venues to accommodate different guest counts, styles, and budgets. According to Notre Dame Hospitality, “We have a wide range of venues to fit all needs and budgets.” Each reception is custom-designed based on the couple’s vision, guest count, and budget. Below are some of the more popular spots for hosting a wedding reception.

Smith Ballroom

A classic ballroom setting inside The Morris Inn offers timeless elegance with beautiful campus views. Smith Ballroom provides the traditional reception atmosphere many couples envision for their Notre Dame celebration.

Dahnke Ballroom

Meanwhile, located in the Duncan Student Center, Dahnke Ballroom offers stunning views of Notre Dame Stadium and the campus skyline. This venue provides a unique combination of elegance and Fighting Irish spirit, making it perfect for couples who want their reception to feel distinctly Notre Dame.

Downes Club

Perched above Notre Dame Stadium, Downes Club offers panoramic views of the football field and campus. Downes Club is a perfect venue for couples who want to incorporate Fighting Irish tradition into their reception celebration.

Private Dining at The Morris Inn

For more intimate celebrations, The Morris Inn offers private dining options that provide elegant on-campus reception experiences. The convenience of on-campus accommodations combined with reception venues makes this ideal for destination wedding celebrations.

Foley’s at O’Neill Hall

This premium reception space in O’Neill Hall on the south side of Notre Dame Stadium features three distinct dining areas: Chef’s Dining, Main Dining, and the bar, Joe’s. Perfect for a fun reception and hosting your welcome party.

This venue offers a contemporary setting with beautiful field views, perfect for couples seeking an intimate reception atmosphere within the traditional Notre Dame setting.

Reception Booking and Costs

Couples interested in Notre Dame campus receptions should contact the Notre Dame Hospitality team directly at hospitality@nd.edu. While peak season and popular venues book quickly, the hospitality team works to find the perfect venue for every couple’s celebration.

The custom nature of Notre Dame receptions means pricing varies significantly based on guest count, venue selection, catering choices, and specific requirements. Everything is designed around the couple’s vision, guest count, and budget to create a unique celebration.

No University Connection Required

One of the most important distinctions is that anyone can host their reception on campus – you do not need to have a Basilica ceremony to book a campus reception. However, any ceremonies held on campus must go through Campus Ministry.

Combining Basilica Wedding + Notre Dame Reception

For couples who qualify for Basilica ceremonies, combining the sacred ceremony with a campus reception creates the ultimate Notre Dame wedding experience. This combination requires careful coordination between Campus Ministry and Notre Dame Hospitality.

Logistics and Timeline Considerations

Notre Dame’s compact campus facilitates seamless transitions between ceremony and reception venues. The university’s hospitality team coordinates timeline requirements based on ceremony times, vendor setup needs, and specific venue requirements.

For couples hosting receptions on campus, Notre Dame offers limited golf cart rentals to assist with transportation between venues, particularly helpful for elderly family members or guests with mobility considerations. If available, I highly recommend booking the golf cart rental. Having a small shuttle can also be helpful to get your guests or wedding party around campus, especially in the summer heat or winter cold.

Alternative Options for All Couples

Getting married at Notre Dame doesn’t require a Basilica ceremony. Couples who don’t qualify for Basilica ceremonies can still create authentic Notre Dame wedding experiences through campus receptions combined with ceremonies at other beautiful South Bend Catholic or other denominational churches.

Making It Feel Like a “Notre Dame Wedding”

According to Notre Dame Hospitality, couples can absolutely feel like they’re having a “Notre Dame Wedding” without the Basilica ceremony. “Having a Notre Dame wedding is about the entire Notre Dame experience. Couples come to campus to celebrate tradition, personal memories, and a higher degree of hospitality.”

Guest Accommodations & Campus Logistics

Getting Around Campus

Notre Dame’s walking campus design enhances the wedding experience, allowing guests to enjoy the beautiful architecture and landscaping between events. The compact campus makes navigation simple, though couples should consider transportation needs for elderly guests or those with mobility challenges.

Notre Dame recommends walking when possible, with golf cart rentals available for reception couples who need assistance with transportation logistics.

Accommodations and Parking

The Morris Inn on campus provides convenient accommodations for wedding guests, though early booking is essential during peak wedding and football seasons. Parking is available in designated lots, with specific protocols for wedding party drop-offs and guest parking coordinated through the wedding planner. Parking is available at The Grotto Lot for Basilica weddings. The Stadium lots are also open for parking when you are hosting your wedding at one of the venues at the stadium.

Photography at Notre Dame: Iconic Campus Locations

Notre Dame’s 1,250-acre campus offers endless opportunities for stunning wedding photography. The areas on campus are endless and can be catered to you and where you want your wedding photos to be taken. According to Katie Whitcomb from Notre Dame Hospitality, “The best photography spots are found when the light hits just right,” though several locations consistently rank as favorites among most couples. Below is a list of some popular spots and a blog post that goes more in depth about Where to Take Wedding Photos at Notre Dame.

Best Campus Photography Locations

God Quad and The Golden Dome serves as Notre Dame’s most iconic landmark, providing instantly recognizable backdrops that identify photos as distinctly Notre Dame.

The Grotto offers peaceful, spiritual settings perfect for intimate portraits. This replica of the Lourdes Grotto creates serene atmospheres for both ceremony and portrait photography.

Sesquicentennial Pergola near the engineering building provides beautiful architectural framing with campus backdrops. This is one that I often call “The Greenery Arch”. It is stunning in the summer months and even better in May when the wisteria is in bloom.

Notre Dame Stadium represents Fighting Irish tradition, though access requires special coordination.

Football Field Photography Access

Many couples dream of wedding photos on the Notre Dame football field. According to Notre Dame Hospitality, Notre Dame limits field access to couples hosting wedding receptions on campus, and only during the season between the Blue & Gold game and the final home game. Even then, Notre Dame requires approval within 7-10 days of the wedding date and does not guarantee access. If you are hosting your reception on campus, make sure to put in the request sooner rather than later if you are wanting photos inside the stadium.

Timeline Recommendations

Notre Dame weddings require careful timeline planning to accommodate both ceremony and reception logistics. The timeline varies based on ceremony location, vendor setup requirements, and specific campus venue needs.

For Basilica ceremonies, couples receive a 2-hour window: arriving 30 minutes before the ceremony and having 90 minutes for the liturgy and photos. This structured timeline ensures all couples can celebrate in this sacred space.

Common Planning Mistakes

First, understanding the distinction between Basilica eligibility and reception availability prevents disappointment and allows couples to plan appropriately.

Second, booking timeline misconceptions: while reception venues are open to everyone, peak dates still book quickly and require advance planning.

Third, photography restrictions: consequently, understanding campus photography policies and Basilica guidelines ensures couples get the images they want within sacred space requirements.

Vendor Coordination

Notre Dame maintains an exclusive list of preferred wedding vendors provided to couples once they book their reception. This curated vendor network understands campus logistics, restrictions, and opportunities, ensuring seamless execution of your Notre Dame wedding vision. Though you do not have to book within that vendor network, it can be beneficial to know your vendors are comfortable and familiar working on campus. It makes the day as seamless as can be.

As a result, couples are responsible for sharing Notre Dame’s vendor guidelines with their photographers, videographers, florists, and wedding coordinators to ensure compliance with campus policies.

What Sets Notre Dame Weddings Apart

Beyond stunning architecture and beautiful venues, getting married at Notre Dame offers something unique: the opportunity to celebrate your marriage in a place dedicated to faith, tradition, and community. As Katie Whitcomb with Notre Dame Hospitality explains, “Notre Dame is more than a venue; it’s a memory you are sharing with your guests from your first date, and it’s an experience that leaves guests with their own fond memories from your day.”

The Complete Notre Dame Experience

Whether you’re alumni returning to your alma mater, couples with family connections to the university, or simply drawn to Notre Dame’s spiritual and aesthetic beauty, your wedding becomes part of the university’s continuing story of love and commitment.

The combination of sacred ceremony options, elegant reception venues, iconic photography locations, and exceptional hospitality creates wedding celebrations that honor your personal love story. At the same time, it beautifully reflects the timeless traditions that make Notre Dame extraordinary.
