Where to Take Engagement Photos at Saint Mary’s College: 4 Beautiful Spots

If you are wondering where to take engagement photos at Saint Mary’s College, the campus has so much more to offer than one recognizable backdrop. From the architecture of Le Mans Hall to the greenery surrounding Lake Marian, Saint Mary’s gives couples a beautiful mix of classic architecture, gardens, water and tree-lined paths all within one engagement session.

After photographing engagement sessions and weddings at Saint Mary’s College for years, I have a handful of locations I return to again and again. The best spot often depends on the light, the season, and the look a couple wants for their photographs, which is why I love moving throughout campus rather than staying in one place for an entire session.

Four of my favorite places to take engagement photos at Saint Mary’s are:

Each location photographs a little differently, and together they create a Saint Mary’s engagement gallery that feels varied while still telling the story of this beautiful campus.

The Bridge and Lake Marian Island

The bridge leading to Lake Marian Island is one of my favorite places to begin or end an engagement session at Saint Mary’s College. The water, mature trees and bridge itself give us several different backgrounds without having to move very far.

I especially love this area later in the evening. When the light comes through the trees behind the bridge, it can create the warm, glowy photographs you see throughout so many of my Saint Mary’s engagement sessions. Once the sun drops a little lower, the string lights around the bridge and the fountain on Lake Marian give the area an entirely different feel.

The bridge also gives us plenty of ways to create variety. Couples can walk across it, sit together, or simply use the bridge and lake as part of the background. Lake Marian Island is the formal name Saint Mary’s uses for the island at the center of the lake, and it sits right in the heart of campus.

Photographer tip: This is one of those locations where timing really matters. I would rather photograph here when the light is beautiful than follow a rigid order of locations. I plan my Saint Mary’s engagement sessions around where the best light is throughout the evening.

The Willows and Gardens Around Lake Marian

For couples who want their Saint Mary’s engagement photos to feel romantic and filled with greenery, the area surrounding Lake Marian offers some of the prettiest natural backgrounds on campus.

The willow trees are a favorite because their branches create a soft frame around a couple and photograph beautifully when the evening light filters through them. This area also gives us room for movement, so I love using it for walking photographs, twirling, or some of the more playful moments of an engagement session.

Around the lake, we can also move into the gardens for photographs that feel completely different from the larger campus views. The greenery, stone, flowers, and smaller garden areas create intimate backgrounds where the focus stays almost entirely on the couple.

This is one reason I love photographing engagement sessions at Saint Mary’s. We can create photographs that look like they were taken in a garden and, only a few minutes later, photograph in front of one of the College’s most recognizable buildings.

Le Mans Hall

If you want photographs that immediately feel like Saint Mary’s College, Le Mans Hall belongs on the list.

Saint Mary’s itself describes Le Mans as the “castle” that greets visitors as they enter campus from The Avenue. The building was dedicated in 1926 and remains one of the most recognizable pieces of architecture on campus.

For engagement photographs, I love using more than just the traditional view directly in front of Le Mans. The front steps are beautiful for a classic portrait, but the arches, brickwork, covered walkways and side of the building give us opportunities to create images that feel architectural without every photograph looking exactly the same.

The covered areas are especially useful because they give us another lighting option if the sun is still a little strong. They also make beautiful black-and-white photographs because of the repeating arches, lines and contrast.

If Saint Mary’s is part of your story, whether you attended the College or simply love the campus, I always think it is worth creating at least a few portraits where Le Mans is unmistakably part of the photograph.

The Avenue

The Avenue is one of my favorite ways to finish a Saint Mary’s engagement session.

This tree-lined road is the main entrance into campus, and Saint Mary’s even notes how meaningful that first drive down The Avenue is to many alumnae. It is simple compared with some of the other locations on this list, but that simplicity is exactly why it photographs so beautifully.

The tall trees create natural leading lines toward the couple, while the open road gives us space for walking, movement and wider portraits. Near sunset, the light can come through the trees beautifully and give the entire background a warm glow.

Because The Avenue is an active campus roadway, photographs here need to be approached carefully and only when it is safe to do so. I never consider a photograph worth compromising anyone’s safety or interfering with campus traffic.

Planning Engagement Photos at Saint Mary’s College

One of the biggest advantages of choosing Saint Mary’s is how much variety we can create without leaving campus. The official campus map places Lake Marian, Le Mans Hall and The Avenue within the same central campus area, making it possible to move between very different backgrounds during one session.

I generally recommend planning Saint Mary’s engagement photos later in the day when possible. The exact start time changes throughout the year because I want to work backward from sunset rather than use the same start time for every season. That gives us a chance to photograph some locations while the light is still bright and clean, then save the areas that look especially beautiful in golden-hour light for later.

I also recommend bringing two outfits if your engagement collection allows time for it. A dressier outfit looks beautiful against the architecture around Le Mans Hall and The Avenue, while a more relaxed outfit works perfectly around the bridge, lake and gardens. You certainly do not have to follow that formula, though. The goal is for your photographs to still feel like you.

Parking and Visiting Campus

If you are coming to Saint Mary’s for engagement photos, it is worth looking at the College’s current parking information before your session rather than assuming you can park near whichever location we plan to use.

Saint Mary’s designates specific areas for visitors, and parking restrictions vary throughout campus. For example, Le Mans Circle is reserved for official campus guests unless special permission has been granted, while the College lists designated visitor parking elsewhere on campus. Current regulations are enforced throughout the calendar year, so I recommend following posted signage and checking the College’s parking map before arriving.

Saint Mary’s also maintains a current campus map that can be helpful if you are unfamiliar with campus: Saint Mary’s College Maps and Directions

Because campus policies can change, couples should also confirm any current rules or permissions for professional photography with Saint Mary’s College before their session. I take care to respect the campus, students and events happening while we photograph there.
