A couple of weeks ago I spent some time with Claire and Brian capturing their Saint Mary’s College and Downtown South Bend Engagement Photos. Some couples walk onto campus and it feels like just another pretty backdrop. And then there are couples like Claire and Brian, where you can tell the place actually means something. For Claire, Saint Mary’s isn’t just a beautiful setting for engagement photos. She’s a Belle, and next June she and Brian will get married right there in Holy Spirit Chapel inside Le Mans Hall before celebrating at the Palais Royale. So, when we talked about where to do their engagement session, it was kind of a no-brainer on where to do them.
We started the evening at Saint Mary’s, beginning in front of Le Mans Hall. If you’ve never been to Saint Mary’s campus, you know Le Mans is iconic, with all the archways and intricate stone work. It is always my favorite place to photograph at Saint Mary’s, hot take I know, especially when there is a pond with weeping willows right next to it.

Saint Mary’s College Engagement Session Hidden Gems
From there we wandered through the cloistered corridor along the building. This was actually a new spot for me. I usually stay on the outside of darker spaces, but these turned out to be some of my favorite images from the entire evening. The arched brick hallway gives this incredible depth, paired with some of the most beautiful historic stonework I had somehow never noticed before. It is truly amazing how I can photograph at a place so many times and still discover something new each time I am there. And do you notice what looks like it used to be a Holy Water font? I am obsessed.

Then we made our way down the Avenue, Saint Mary’s iconic tree-lined main drive. Summer is genuinely one of the best times to photograph here. The canopy is completely full and when the sun drops low, the light filters through in this warm, dreamy way that feels almost unreal. By the time we hit the Avenue the nerves were gone and we were having so much fun. So, I decided it was the perfect place for a classic dip photo. After that, we finished with a few on the iconic bridge, that every girl knows and loves!

Downtown South Bend Engagement Photos at Leeper Park
After Saint Mary’s we headed downtown to Leeper Park along the St. Joe River, and Claire changed into her second outfit. It was a sage green look that was absolutely perfect for the warm summer evening light down by the water. Golden hour here is chef’s kiss. The light hits the water, the old bridge arches in the background, everything just glows. The renovations to this park really have made such a difference, and it is one that I will be adding to my favorite places to photograph an engagement session in South Bend!

We ended the session at the fountain in Leeper Park, which is such an underused gem in South Bend. I will be honest, if you want to use this fountain, go before the lights come on. We pushed this session until the very last bit of light we could use, and because of that the colored lights came on and they aren’t really my thing. But even still, you can see the gorgeous backdrop with the river and historic North Shore Drive behind them. Stunning!

Claire and Brian, I cannot wait for your wedding day next June. Holy Spirit Chapel and the Palais Royale, it’s going to be so beautiful and so much fun to hang out with you again.
