A NOTE ABOUT THIS GUIDE
I am so excited to be working with you, and I cannot wait to spend time together during your engagement session! It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous — in fact, I still get butterflies before my own family photos (and I do this for a living!).
Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts of the wedding journey for a few reasons. First, they give you the chance to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day. Most couples need a little time to warm up and settle into the rhythm of being photographed, and that’s perfectly natural. Since wedding day timelines can feel a bit rushed, engagement photos make a big difference — couples who have practiced beforehand tend to feel more relaxed, which leads to even more natural and joyful portraits on the big day.
Second, your engagement session is the perfect opportunity to showcase your personalities in a setting that feels meaningful to you. Whether it’s a favorite park, a charming downtown street, or a destination that tells part of your love story, these photos capture a more casual, everyday glimpse of your relationship. They’re also wonderful for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or simply to frame in your home.
Because I get asked the same questions often, I’ve created this guide to walk you through the entire process. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to know — from what to wear, to choosing the perfect location, to tips for making your session feel effortless and fun. My hope is that this guide will help you feel excited and confident as we prepare for this special time together!
If you’ve never had professional photos taken together, you might be wondering what the experience will be like. My goal is to make your engagement session feel relaxed, natural, and fun — more like spending time together on a date than being posed for stiff photos.
I’ll gently guide you through prompts and movements that help you interact with each other in a way that feels genuine. Think laughing, walking hand-in-hand, twirling, or leaning in close — all those little moments that capture your relationship as it truly is. You don’t need to worry about knowing what to do or how to pose; I’ll take care of that for you. And it will go by so fast!
Most couples start out feeling a little nervous, but by the end, you’ll be surprised by how comfortable and even joyful it feels. Many of my couples tell me their session ends up being one of their favorite parts of wedding planning because it gave them the chance to slow down, soak each other in, and celebrate this sweet season together.
Alright fellas — let’s be honest. Having your photo taken may not sound like the most exciting way to spend your day. You might even be thinking, “How long will this take?” or “Do I really have to?” (Don’t worry, you’re not the first groom-to-be to think that!)
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to know how to pose, smile on command, or suddenly become a model. I’ll guide you through everything, and most of the time you’ll just be focusing on your fiancée — which I think is a win.
By the end, most guys tell me, “That was actually kind of fun.” You’ll get to laugh, joke around, maybe twirl her once or twice, and sneak in a few extra kisses (which she’ll love). Basically, your only job is to show up, love on your bride-to-be, and let me do the rest. Easy, right?
A NOTE TO
Engagement sessions can take place anywhere from immediately following a proposal to just a few days before the wedding. We’ve found that there isn’t a “good” or “bad” time to take your photos. We normally plan sessions based on a particular “look” a couple has in mind, spring flowers for example, or based on schedules.
Sessions typically last about an hour and a half and when when we can—we love to begin sessions about two hours before sunset. We prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. The first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot.
I schedule sessions during what I believe will be the best light of the day - which means that it’s super important to be on time. If you’re late to an evening session, we could run out of light before we’ve finished shooting and if your session takes place in the morning, the sun gets more harsh as it rises.
Each season brings its own unique charm
Elegant neutrals, cozy coats, and the chance for snow — perfect for chic, timeless portraits.
Fresh blooms, soft pastels, and perfect temps (plus, it’s allergy season — so bring tissues if needed!)
Long days, lush greens, golden sunsets — just keep in mind it can get hot and humid. If it is too hot that day, we will reschedule!
Crisp air, cozy vibes, and stunning autumn colors. A favorite for many couples!
If you’d like to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates, you’ll want to schedule your session at least 6–8 months before the wedding. That gives plenty of time for editing, printing, and mailing.
If you’re not using them for save-the-dates, you have more flexibility — I’ve photographed engagement sessions anywhere from a year in advance to just a few weeks before the big day. Either way, your photos will be a meaningful keepsake of this season.

The above locations are all beautiful but we also love exploring meaningful locations with our couples!
NOITE: I only offer beach sessions during non peak seasons. (Spring & Fall). Crowds and heat make beach sessions particularly hard in the summer.
MEANINGFUL PLACES
Where you had your first date, got engaged, or love to spend time together.
NATURE SETTINGS
Parks, gardens, beaches, rolling countryside, or woodlands — all create soft, organic backdrops.
ARCHITECTURE & CITYSCAPES
Charming downtown streets, elegant buildings, or a rooftop with a view can add a polished, chic vibe.
HOME SESSIONS
For a cozy, intimate feel, some couples love including their home or backyard.
Many of my couples don’t actually live here in South Bend, and often ask me to come out to them for their engagement session. I love traveling to new places for photos — past sessions have taken me everywhere from Arizona to Florida, Charleston to North Carolina, Philadelphia, and even Washington, D.C. and New York City. Each location has its own charm, and it’s so special to capture your love story in the city or landscape you call home.
If we haven’t already discussed the possibility of an engagement session where you live, now is the perfect time to chat about it! Travel fees do apply, but I’ll walk you through everything so it’s simple and stress-free to plan. Whether we’re exploring your neighborhood, wandering downtown streets, or chasing golden hour in a favorite park, a destination session is always such a meaningful way to capture this season.
I know pets are such a special part of many couples’ lives, and I completely understand wanting to include them in your photos! That said, engagement sessions are really about the two of you — your connection, your story, and this sweet season of your life together. Because of that, I usually recommend keeping pets involved only for a small portion of your session.
If you’d like to include your dog, the best approach is to have a trusted friend or family member bring them along at the very beginning of the session. We’ll capture a few fun photos right away, and then your helper can take your pup back home so we can finish the rest of the session focused on just the two of you.
For everyone’s comfort and safety, it’s also important that your dog is well-behaved around crowds, strangers, and other people. This ensures the experience is enjoyable for you, your pup, and the flow of our time together.
This way, you’ll get a handful of sweet images with your furry friend and a full gallery that highlights your love story.
TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUR BEST
Your outfits set the tone for your engagement session, and choosing looks that feel both comfortable and timeless will make a huge difference in your photos. Ultimately, the goal is to look like the best version of yourselves — polished, comfortable, and confident. A few things to keep in mind as you plan:
Here are links to some of my style guides/inspirations on pinterest. You will notice mostly neutrals and not many patterns. Neutrals lend themselves well to my style but if you love color, feel free! If you have questions you can always send me photos of your outfits to get feedback!
Pick colors and styles that complement each other instead of wearing the exact same thing. This gives your photos depth and variety without looking too uniform.
Think creams, tans, blush, light blues, grays, and muted pastels. These tones keep the focus on you, not the clothes, and flatter all skin tones.
Unless it's Notre Dame - Go Irish
Bold prints, neon colors, or clothing with writing can pull attention away from your connection. Simple, classic pieces always look best.
I encourage bringing two outfits — one dressier look (think romantic date night) and one more casual look. This gives you two different vibes for your gallery.
Flowing fabrics, layers, and textures (like lace, linen, or knits) add softness and dimension to your photos.

For women, engagement photos are the perfect excuse to dress up a little and wear something that makes you feel both beautiful and confident. Here are a few tips to help you choose:
Dresses & Skirts: Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully, especially when they move in the wind or as you walk. Midi and maxi lengths are especially flattering and timeless.
Colors & Fabrics: Soft, romantic tones (cream, blush, dusty blue, sage, etc.) and lightweight fabrics (chiffon, silk, lace) keep the focus on you and add movement to your images.
Shoes: Choose something that you can comfortably walk in. Heels elongate the legs and look polished, but you might want to bring flats or sandals for walking between spots.

Statement jewelry is a great way to add color or pattern to a simple dress.
Lace and tulle look amazing in photographs.
Statement earrings, delicate necklaces, or a chic hat can add personality without being distracting.
And dresses with lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms.
Depending on your location, you might want to consider a fit and flare or a flowy dress!
They look great in walking and photos with movement.
Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to dress up!

Engagement sessions are the perfect time for a hair and makeup trial! Professionally done hair & makeup last longer than typical hair & makeup. They also tend to hold up better for humiditiy and wind.
We think it’s so important that you look and feel your best for your engagement photos - and if you’re planning to do a hair & makeup trial anyways, the engagement session is a great time to test how your hair & makeup look on camera.

There will probably be times during your session when we’re shooting your hands holding or the engagement ring on your hand - which means it’s a good idea to clean up your nails before your session (this applies to the guys too!).

Above all, choose an outfit that makes you feel radiant. When you feel comfortable and confident, it always shines through in your photos. Trends will come and go, but your engagement images are heirlooms — and they should feel just as beautiful and true to you decades from now as they do today. Instead of choosing something simply because it’s fashionable, lean into pieces that you genuinely love and feel your best in.
When you feel like yourself — comfortable, elegant, and confident — that’s when the most natural, joyful images are created. Confidence is always more photogenic than the latest style, and it’s what makes your portraits timeless. And trust me, you'll love the photos so much more if you chose something that is flattering and you feel good in vs. the trendy option.

For men, the goal is to look sharp while still feeling comfortable and natural. The right outfit can elevate your photos without making you feel overdressed or stiff. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Well-Fitted Clothing: Clothes that fit properly (not too baggy, not too tight) always look the most polished.
Classic Layers: A sport coat, sweater, or jacket adds depth and can be removed for variety.
Colors & Tones: Neutral, solid colors (navy, gray, cream, soft earth tones) photograph best. Skip bold patterns or neon shades.
Pants & Shoes: Trousers or chinos look more polished than jeans, though dark jeans can work if styled with a blazer. Finish with clean dress shoes or leather boots.
The key is choosing clothing that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourself. When you feel relaxed and at ease, it shows in every image.

A little preparation goes a long way toward making your engagement session smooth and stress-free. Here are a few things I recommend:
□ Clean your ring
I’ll be photographing it up close, and a quick polish will make it sparkle.
□ Iron or steam outfits
Wrinkle-free clothes instantly look more polished in photos.
□ Bring a touch-up bag
Lipstick, powder, bobby pins, or anything else that helps you feel fresh.
□ Comfortable shoes for walking
You can always change into heels or dress shoes once we’re at the location.
□ Check the weather
Bring layers or accessories if needed (coat, shawl, umbrella, etc.).
□ Empty your pockets
Phones, wallets, and keys can create bulges that show in photos.
□ Get a good night’s rest
You’ll feel more relaxed and look refreshed.
□ Hydrate
Drinking plenty of water the day before helps with glowing skin and energy.
A little bit of planning makes a big difference in how confident and comfortable you’ll feel during your session!
The best engagement photos happen when you’re relaxed, connected, and simply enjoying each other’s company. The secret? Treat your session less like a photoshoot and more like a date night.
Laugh together. Hold hands. Whisper something silly in each other’s ears. Steal a few kisses. When you focus on each other instead of the camera, that’s when the magic happens.
Don’t worry about being “perfect” — the little moments are often the most beautiful. If the wind catches your hair or you start laughing mid-pose, it just adds to the story of who you are as a couple.
Think of this as a chance to slow down in the middle of busy wedding planning, celebrate your love, and create memories you’ll treasure for years to come. And then when we're done, go out on the town, dressed up and feeling excited about the chapter ahead!
One of the most common worries I hear before engagement sessions is, “We’re awkward in front of the camera — what do we do with our hands?” Let me assure you: you do not need to know how to pose, model, or act a certain way. That’s my job.
I’ll gently guide you through simple prompts and natural movements — walking hand in hand, twirling, leaning in close, or sharing a quiet laugh. These aren’t stiff poses; they’re ways to help you connect so the photos feel authentic and effortless.
Your only “assignment” is to focus on each other. Hold hands. Kiss her on the forehead. Whisper something sweet (or funny) in his ear. The more you interact with each other, the more natural your photos will look and feel.
So don’t stress about your hands — I’ll tell you exactly what to do, and before you know it, you’ll be laughing together and wondering why you ever worried in the first place.
I’ll share a few favorite images on instagram within a a week after your session so you have something to enjoy (and share!) right away.
Your full gallery will be ready within a few weeks. You’ll receive an online gallery where you can view, download, and share your images easily with family and friends.
Engagement portraits are perfect for save-the-dates, wedding websites, framed prints in your home, or even as part of your wedding day décor (like a guest book or reception display).
I hope you’ll take some time to simply enjoy the photos together. They’re not only beautiful portraits, but also a reflection of this unique, joyful season in your story.
Inclement Weather
Weather can be unpredictable
RAIN
I always keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session. If it looks like heavy rain — or even a drizzle — it’s usually best to reschedule. Wet conditions can make it tricky to move around comfortably and limit some of the posing we’d normally do. My goal is for your engagement session to feel fun, relaxed, and enjoyable, and sometimes that means waiting for a clearer day to ensure the best experience.
HEAT & HUMIDITY
Summer sessions can be beautiful, but extreme heat isn’t comfortable for anyone. If the forecast shows a heat index above 95°F, it’s usually best to reschedule for a cooler day. High heat can make it difficult to enjoy the session, and I always want you to look and feel your best. For warm but manageable days, I recommend bringing water, blotting tissues, and maybe even a backup outfit if needed.
COLD & WIND
Chilly weather can make for cozy, romantic photos — but comfort is key. If temperatures drop too low for us to safely enjoy the session, we’ll reschedule for a milder day. Otherwise, bring layers you can add or remove, hand warmers, or a stylish coat that complements your outfit. A little wind can actually add movement and elegance to your images — think windswept hair and flowing fabrics — but if it’s extremely strong or bitterly cold (Windchill of 20ºF and below) we’ll adjust as needed.
but don’t worry — we’ll make a plan together
so you don’t have to stress.
The key is flexibility. We’ll always keep an eye on the forecast, and if needed, we’ll adjust timing or reschedule so that your session feels comfortable and stress-free. No matter what, I’ll make sure you end up with photos you love.
I know that this guide is long and hopefully it covers everything you need to know to prep for your engagement session! However if there is something I missed, or you need a recommendation feel free to email
